Hello good people.
My name is R.W. Smith. I’m a dad. A husband. A neighbor. A person who reads way too many staff reports so other people don’t have to. I’ve spent most of my adult life in the quiet, unglamorous spaces where systems either work… or don’t.
I’ve worked in logistics, environmental services, manufacturing, and community nonprofits. I’ve reported environmental violations when it wasn’t popular. I’ve volunteered in disaster response, community gardens, and local boards. I’ve sat at kitchen tables with people who are just trying to make rent, keep their kids safe, and feel like someone in government actually sees them.
Over time, a pattern became impossible to ignore.
Decisions with enormous long-term impact are often buried in technical language, rushed timelines, and budget structures that most people never get a fair chance to understand. Years later, families feel the consequences. Higher taxes. Fewer services. Projects stalled. Trust eroded until we all become numb.
I’m running because I believe local government should be legible, accountable for failed choices, and never blindly followed.
People deserve straight answers, not empty buzzwords. They deserve leaders who treat public money like it actually belongs to the public. They deserve leadership that models restraint, honesty, and shared sacrifice. And they deserve someone willing to ask uncomfortable questions before costs get locked in, not after.
I don’t pretend to have all the answers. And frankly, I’m cautious of anyone who says they do.
I read the fine print. I listen. I’ve learned the hard way that real change doesn’t come from speeches. It’s built through consistency, transparency, and respect.
I’m running for Clackamas County Commissioner because I believe we can govern with clarity, courage, and care.
Because holding the line is not a vision.
Building a future we can afford, trust, and be proud of is.
